The Point
- Build a web of knowledge
- Retrieve the right memory
- Find connections among topics
- Develop ideas and arguments
Zettlekasten aligns well with Obsidian, where my goal is to learn by concept, and to build a permanent knowledge base that I will actually review. Part of the point of Zettlekasten is to optimize for Serendipity.
Over the course of my time using obsidian, I’ve tried to get myself to journal / habit track / record some proof of life outside of my concrete knowledge base within this app. I haven’t been very successful in this pursuit. I recently watched this video as well as this video about (hybrid) note taking which inspired me to get a physical common place book. My idea is to adopt a hybrid system as opposed to a purely digital system where I will use my commonplace book for:
- Habit tracking
- Fleeting thoughts and ideas (maybe in addition to my Dictations)
- Daily reflections
Where I will consolidate anything worth keeping to my Zettlekasten (Obsidian vault).
Maybe I’ll abandon this approach to transient note taking and revert back to my pure obsidian system, but also, maybe not.
